A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the code assigned to cars, vans, trucks and motorcycles — usually 17 characters on modern vehicles, found on the dashboard, driver's door jamb or registration document. A HIN (Hull Identification Number) is the marine equivalent, typically 12 characters, stamped into the hull near the stern of a boat or PWC.
Vehicles built before VIN standardisation in the late 1970s and early 1980s often carry short 6–7 character chassis numbers instead of the modern 17-character format. Our VIN field accepts variable-length alphanumeric input specifically so classic and vintage vehicle owners aren't locked out.
On most cars it's visible through the windscreen on the driver's side dashboard, stamped on the driver's door jamb, or printed on your registration document (V5C in the UK, Kfz-Schein in Germany, and equivalents elsewhere in the EU).
Specification data (make, model, engine, trim) is decoded directly from the VIN structure itself, so it's highly reliable. Title, mileage and recall data reflect what has been reported to the sources we check — not every incident is officially recorded in every country, so treat a clean report as strong evidence, not an absolute guarantee.
Our coverage is strongest across Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Poland, Ireland, Austria and Portugal, cross-referenced with NHTSA vPIC data for globally manufactured vehicles.

Yes — most people run a report before buying, using the VIN or HIN from the listing or a photo the seller has sent. You don't need to own the vehicle to check its history.
